Migrate to Shopify · from Shopware

Shopware to Shopify migration, with properties, rules and SEO URLs mapped before launch

Shopware stores leave because Shopware 5 reached end of life in July 2024, Shopware 6’s commercial plans are priced on gross merchandise value, and every Rule Builder change past a certain point needs a plugin. We move the catalogue, customer groups, order history and every ranking URL to Shopify, test it on a staging store, and switch over on a day you choose.

01Why merchants leave Shopware

What Shopware costs you that Shopify does not

  1. 01Shopware 5 is out of supportSecurity updates for Shopware 5 ended in July 2024, and a move to Shopware 6 is a full rebuild: new storefront in Twig, new plugin API, new admin. If you have to rebuild, you can choose the platform you rebuild on.
  2. 02Commercial plans priced on turnoverShopware 6 Community Edition is free, and the features growing stores reach for (the B2B components among them) sit in the Rise, Evolve and Beyond plans priced on gross merchandise value. Shopify Plus is a published monthly rate with B2B included.
  3. 03Self-hosting, or a cloud that blocks your pluginsSelf-hosted Shopware 6 needs PHP, MySQL, Elasticsearch or OpenSearch for larger catalogues, a message queue and someone to run updates. Shopware’s SaaS cloud removes the servers and also refuses the plugins you cannot upload there, so you rebuild them as apps. Shopify hosts everything and still runs your custom apps.
  4. 04Every rule needs a developer sooner or laterRule Builder, Flow Builder and Shopping Experiences cover a lot, until a promotion or shipping rule needs a condition they lack and a plugin gets written. On Shopify the same logic runs in Shopify Functions and Flow, which we write and hand over with the scope.
02What moves

Everything that comes across, and the catch for each

A Shopware store is more than its products. This is the list we check off, record by record, before launch.

  • Products and variantsVariants generated from property groups become Shopify options and variants. Products with more than three option dimensions or 100 variants are restructured and linked.
  • Properties and custom fieldsProperties used for filtering become metafields that feed Search & Discovery filters; custom fields become metafields shown by the theme.
  • Categories and dynamic product groupsThe category tree becomes collections with the hierarchy in the menus. Dynamic product groups become automated collections where Shopify’s conditions can express the rule, and manual collections where they cannot.
  • Customers and customer groupsAccounts, addresses, newsletter consent and group membership. Gross and net customer groups become B2B companies and catalogues on Shopify Plus, or customer tags. Passwords cannot move, so customers get an invite to set a new one.
  • OrdersOrder history with line items, totals, tax lines, delivery states and payment states mapped to Shopify order and fulfilment statuses.
  • Sales channels and languagesEach storefront sales channel with its languages and currencies becomes a Shopify Market, with translations imported into Translate & Adapt.
  • Shopping Experiences and contentShopping Experience layouts are rebuilt as Online Store 2.0 sections your team edits in the theme editor. Landing pages become Shopify pages.
  • Reviews and newsletter recipientsNative Shopware reviews or Trusted Shops, Judge.me and Yotpo data imported with ratings and dates. Newsletter recipients go to Shopify Email or Klaviyo with consent dates kept.

04How the migration runs

Five steps, with the old store trading the whole time

  1. 01Audit and planWe export the plugin list, the rules, the URL list from Search Console and the data counts per sales channel, and give you a written migration plan with a fixed price and a launch date.
  2. 02Build the Shopify storeTheme design and build on a staging store while Shopware keeps trading. Each plugin, rule and flow that mattered gets a named Shopify app, Function or Flow.
  3. 03Migrate and verify dataProducts, properties, customers, orders, reviews and content are imported per sales channel, then checked record by record against the Shopware exports.
  4. 04Redirects and SEOA full redirect map from Shopware SEO URLs to the new ones, meta titles and descriptions carried across per language, structured data rebuilt and the sitemap ready for Search Console.
  5. 05Launch and watchA final delta import of new orders and customers, then DNS switches on the day you choose. We watch Search Console, orders and error logs for the first weeks and fix anything the data flags.
05Shopware traps

The things that go wrong when this migration is rushed

  1. 01SEO URL templatesShopware 6 builds product URLs from a template, by default the product name followed by the product number, and category URLs from the category path. Shopware 5 stores often carry a second set of legacy URLs. Every one gets a 301 to /products/handle or /collections/handle, and we test the top pages from Search Console by hand.
  2. 02Variant explosions from property groupsA product with size, colour, material and length properties generates every combination, which can run past Shopify’s three options and 100 variants (2,048 on Plus). We split those products before import and link them with a swatch in the theme.
  3. 03German legal requirements in the themeUnit prices (Grundpreis), delivery times, the tax and shipping note under each price and the order button wording are built into Shopware themes. Shopify supports unit prices natively; the rest we rebuild in the theme and checkout so the store is compliant on launch day.
  4. 04Rules that encode years of decisionsRule Builder conditions decide who sees which price, which shipping method and which payment option. We export every rule, write down what each one does and map it to a Function, a Market setting or a discount before anything is built, so pricing behaves the same on launch day.
