Migrate to Shopify · from Squarespace
Squarespace to Shopify migration, with /shop/p/ URLs redirected and the blog moved with its images
Squarespace stores leave when a single currency, a fixed checkout and a short list of extensions start costing orders. We move the catalogue, the customers, the order history and every ranking URL to Shopify, rebuild the design in a theme your team can edit, and switch over on a day you choose.

01Why merchants leave Squarespace
What Squarespace costs you that Shopify does not
- 01One currency per siteA Squarespace site sells in one currency, so selling to the EU and the UK means a second site or a converter widget that still charges in your home currency. Shopify Markets prices and charges per country from one store.
- 02Commerce features gated by planAbandoned cart recovery, subscriptions and carrier-calculated shipping need the Commerce Advanced plan, and the Business plan adds a transaction fee on top of the processor. Shopify includes abandoned checkout recovery and subscriptions on every plan.
- 03Extensions instead of an app storeSquarespace Extensions covers shipping, accounting and print-on-demand with a few dozen partners. Loyalty, bundles, priced product add-ons and B2B have few or none. Shopify’s App Store has several choices in each category and the data model to support them.
- 04Templates built for portfoliosSquarespace templates put photography first and the shop second, which suits a studio and hurts a 400-product catalogue. Filtering, quick add, swatches and collection pages with real URLs are standard in Shopify themes.
02What moves
Everything that comes across, and the catch for each
A Squarespace store is more than its products. This is the list we check off, record by record, before launch.
- Products and variantsSquarespace variant attributes become Shopify options and variants. Products with more than three attributes or 100 variants are restructured before import. Digital products move to Shopify’s Digital Downloads app.
- Categories and tagsStore page categories become collections with real URLs; tags carry over and feed Shopify filters.
- CustomersCustomer accounts and contact profiles with addresses and marketing consent. Passwords cannot move between platforms, so customers get an invite to set a new one.
- OrdersThe Squarespace order export (line items, totals, shipping, statuses, dates) imported as Shopify orders, so customer service and returns keep working.
- Blog postsSquarespace’s WordPress-format export is converted into Shopify articles, with images re-hosted and internal links rewritten.
- Pages and galleriesStatic pages are rebuilt in the theme; gallery and image blocks become theme sections.
- ReviewsReviews from a third-party app (Yotpo, Judge.me) carry over with the product. For Squarespace’s own product reviews we confirm what the account can export before we quote.
- Discounts, gift cards and subscriptionsDiscount codes become Shopify discounts, outstanding gift card balances migrate on Shopify Plus, and subscription products move to Shopify Subscriptions or Recharge with the next billing date kept.

04How the migration runs
Five steps, with the old store trading the whole time
- 01Audit and planWe list the extensions and code injections, export the URL list from Search Console and the data counts, and give you a written migration plan with a fixed price and a launch date.
- 02Build the Shopify storeTheme design and build on a staging store while Squarespace keeps trading, with your layout recreated in an Online Store 2.0 theme. Each extension that mattered gets a named replacement.
- 03Migrate and verify dataProducts, customers, orders, blog posts and reviews are imported, then checked record by record against the Squarespace exports.
- 04Redirects and SEOA full redirect map from /shop/p/ URLs and blog URLs to the new ones, meta titles and descriptions carried across, structured data rebuilt and the sitemap ready for Search Console.
- 05Launch and watchA final delta import of new orders and customers, then DNS switches on the day you choose. We watch Search Console, orders and error logs for the first weeks and fix anything the data flags.
05Squarespace traps
The things that go wrong when this migration is rushed
- 01/shop/p/ URLs and ?category= pagesSquarespace products sit at /shop/p/product-slug and categories are query strings on the shop page, so categories have never had a URL of their own to rank. Products get a 301 to /products/handle, and categories get a proper /collections/ URL for the first time.
- 02The blog export leaves images behindThe WordPress-format export references images on Squarespace’s CDN rather than including them, and those links die when the site closes. We download every image, re-upload it to Shopify Files and rewrite the article HTML before the Squarespace plan lapses.
- 03Customer accountsAddresses and order history come across. Saved cards and passwords stay with Squarespace. Each customer gets an invitation to set a password, timed with your launch message, and enters their card once at the first Shopify checkout.
- 04Variant attributes past Shopify’s threeSquarespace allows more variant attributes per product than Shopify’s three options. Products using four or more (size, colour, material, length) are split and linked, or the extra attribute becomes a line item property. We decide which, product by product, before import.
